Drivers urged to use caution on snowy roads, at intersections with high snowbanks
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has asked the media to alert drivers to slow down and use caution on roads still covered with snow, but that message could have come from just about any safety organization today, as the Midcoast digs out from the latest snow storm.
“Road conditions are still very slippery and dangerous,” said Chief Deputy Tim Carroll. “I think due to the fact the weather is clear today, people are not being as cautious as they should be.”
Carroll suggested that drivers remember to allow more space between the car in front of them, to avoiding rear-end collisions and other mishaps.
“I know everyone knows, but the snowbanks are very high at intersections. Please allow yourself extra time and and slow down,” said Carroll.
On the weather front, the next storm, that as of yesterday was due to drop up to another foot of snow on the region, has been so far downgraded. And although that may again change, now is the time to shovel out, dig out and prepare for more snowy weather, now or in the near future.
According to the National Weather Service, there is a ”moderate probability” for accumulating snow along the coast late Wednesday into Thursday, Feb. 4-5.
“The exact track and strength of this storm is highly uncertain at this time however,” said the NWS in its noon hazardous weather outlook statement.
According to Weather Underground, there is more than a 50 percent chance of 1-3 inches of snow Wednesday night, with an accumulation of another 3-5 inches of snow during the day Thursday, with snow winding down around 7 that evening.
Friday looks to be partly cloudy with a high of just 13 degrees Fahrenheit, but for those racing in the 25th annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships, the optional first runs for 2- and 3-person teams might be a good choice Friday with the cold temperatures. Saturday is looking to be a stellar day, with highs close to 30 F and a few snow showers. Sunday will again be cold, with highs of 14 F, but it will be partly cloudy so the finals in the toboggan racing at the Camden Snow Bowl should be fast and the periods of sunshine will help it feel a little warmer outside.
