Black ice causes accident, wide power outage in Rockport
ROCKPORT - At 4:13 a.m., Jan. 5, Route 1 “flash-froze,” according to Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley. A pickup truck heading north on that road lost control and hit a utility crossover pole, just north of Mr. Watt Noodles and Sushi. The driver was not injured.
A crossover pole is where all of the lines go from one side of the road to the other, which means that all the electricity and other utilities came down with the power. The electricity is out all the way to Pen Bay Medical Center, three miles down Route 1.
Central Maine Power continues to repair the pole and wires on Route 1 in Rockport this morning, which has caused more than 400 of its local customers to be without power.
Kelley estimated that the stretch of Route 1 will remain closed until noon.
The outage extends west down Main Street, behind Maine Sport, and then into the village, where the Rockport Town Office is delaying opening until noon. The Penobscot Bay Area YMCA is also affected, with some early classes canceled this morning.
