Walking with art in Rockland

ROCKLAND — The air was just about perfect Friday evening, May 2, for the first Rockland Art Walk of the season, as galleries downtown propped opened their doors and welcomed several hours worth of curious and friendly walkers into to see what was hanging on the walls this spring.
Arts in Rockland was established to promote Rockland as an arts destination for those who appreciate, respect and support the arts. Art walks are held the first Friday of the month, 5 to 8 p.m. Participating galleries of Arts in Rockland (AIR) host receptions on the first Friday, as well as Memorial Day Weekend. The Farnsworth Art Museum and the renovated, historic Strand Theater, anchor 23 participating galleries.
The galleries collaborate with the Farnsworth and offer an art film each month at 8 p.m. All sites are within seven blocks, making an accessible artwalk where it is easy to visit every exhibit in one evening. For more information, visit Arts in Rockland.
ArtWalk Maine invites exploration of artist studios, galleries, museums, and assorted venues in downtowns across the state. ArtWalk Maine includes communities and working artists of Maine, from Biddeford to Bangor, Portland to Presque Isle.
Each year Maine communities host more than 80 art walks. The self-guided tours lead to some of Maine’s world-class art museums, galleries, artist studios, local businesses and cafés exhibiting local artwork.
Art walks are an intersection of Maine’s contemporary art scene, its historic downtowns, and the natural world,” according to ArtWalk Maine, the statewide promotional project whose goal is to increase visibility of all Maine artwalks and the artists, businesses and communities they represent. Artwalks are held on islands, inurban centers and revitalized mills. “Local restaurants are open, performances happen, whether their stage is a theater, sidewalk or town green. ArtWalk communities roll out the red carpet for you,” the organization says.
Artwalk Maine is funded in part by grants from the Maine Community Foundation, Quimby Family Foundation, Maine Office of Tourism and the Maine Arts Commission.
