Moore steps down at Oceanside, Stalcup takes over reins

With the 2012 season just underway the Oceanside football team was dealt a blow when head coach Woody Moore stepped down as coach and was replaced by Interim head coach Archie Stalcup.
Moore, who has been the School Health Coordinator, lost his job this school year due to the funding no longer being available. Moore’s job at RSU 13 was funded by the state settlement with the tobacco industry. No one seems to be able to say for certain what happened to that money as it was supposed to be a long term payment spanning 20 years.
While Stalcup was named the interim head coach, according to Athletic Director Jim Leonard, the only way Stalcup would take over was with the understanding that if Moore is able to find work in the area and can commit to the time for coaching that he would get his job back.
In the meantime, the school district had, at a minimum, temporarily lost one of it’s most dedicated educators and coaches. Moore has been the head coach since 2007 when then coach Daryl Weiss resigned to move on to Westbrook High School. Moore had been an assistant coach for Weiss for a few years prior to being named head coach.
Stalcup left the same year as Weiss, where he had been an assistant coach at Rockland and went to Camden Hills, where he was the assistant to Linwood Downs, who also had left Rockland as an assistant to start the football program at Camden Hills.
Stalcup, who was a long time high school coach in New Jersey, also coached the football team at La Salle University, where he was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2001, when he was named head coach. With over 40 years of coaching experience the team is left in good hands, just not the hands that want the job.
“I told Woody to hurry up and find a job and get back here to coach so I can stand on the sidelines,” said Stalcup.
At practice, one could see there was a new person running the show and the team looks like they are ready for some football. Despite the size of the school the numbers are still low for football, with only about five new freshmen coming out to play.
With only two seniors lost to graduation, the core from last year returns and many of the players seen on the field today look bigger, stronger and according to one of the assistant coaches, much more mature that last year. All good signs for Oceanside.
Another addition to the team is the addition of another former assistant coach from Rockland, Russell Dole who is the history teacher at Oceanside West. Dole was an assistant coach at Rockland from 2005-2009. Dole said he was excited to be back and is looking forward to the season.
