PALERMO - Two men were hospitalized after their cars collided on Route 3 in Palermo, Monday night.

Information about the crash was not immediately available. However, on Tuesday, Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeffrey Trafton described the circumstances of the accident, which closed Route 3 for several hours and required one of the men to be transported from the scene by helicopter.

Trafton said Derek Elvin, 20, of Augusta was traveling north on Turner Ridge Road when he ran a stop sign at Route 3.

The silver 2004 SUV he was driving was T-boned by a silver 2008 Toyota pickup driven by Jeffrey Kahl, 59, of Plymouth, N.H.

The crash was reported at 6:35 p.m., Nov. 18, Trafton said. Both men were the sole occupants of their vehicles.

Trafton said Elvin’s SUV caught on fire following the collision and Kahl’s truck flipped over. Kahl had to be extracted from his vehicle. He was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Trafton said Elvin was transported by vehicle to CMMC.

Trafton said he learned later Monday night that Kahl had undergone surgery and was told that the man’s injuries were not considered life threatening but that he may have suffered head injuries. Elvin’s injuries were also considered non-life-threatening, Trafton said.

Penbaypilot.com contacted Central Maine Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon and was told the hospital does not release any information on patients.

Trafton said the crash is currently under investigation and that Deputy Ben Seekins will be doing an accident reconstruction. Asked whether alcohol was involved, Trafton said he didn’t know yet.

“Obviously, the biggest factor in the crash was the fact that the 20-year-old from Augusta did not stop at the stop sign,” he said.
