Camden police make arrests in business burglary, trespassing and theft cases
CAMDEN — Camden police have had a productive week, as far as moving criminal cases from the “under investigation” pile to the “arrest made” pile. Three of those cases involve crimes at businesses, which sustained shattered windows, broken doors, random vandalism, stolen money and cash registers and more.
Detective Curt Andrick Wednesday said that Matthew Donaher, 28, of Camden was arrested this morning and charged with two counts of burglary, class C felonies.
Andrick said Donaher is accused of burglarizing Coastal Automotive on John Street in July, and Scott's Place Aug. 11.
Andrick would not disclose what was taken at Coastal Automotive, owned and operated by Camden Select Board member John French.
"The case is still under investigation as we are still receiving information and more leads need to be followed up on," said Andrick.
Tony Pike of Scott's Place told PenBayPilot.com Aug. 11 that he was woken up by police around 7 a.m. that morning after a neighboring business owner, opening up, noticed Pike's take-out food stand had been broken into. Scott's Place is usually closed on Sundays.
A large rock was used to break the glass on the door of the small building on the edge of the Reny's Plaza parking lot along Route 1 (Elm Street) and the place was rifled through. Pike said it appeared the individual was looking for something, and ended up walking away with some change. Pike was left to repair the damaged door and clean up the items strewn about inside.
Also burglarized overnight Aug. 11 was Camden Exxon on Union Street and Harbor Dogs on the Public Landing.
Rocks were also used to gain entry into Camden Exxon, which sustained numerous broken windows on three sides of the garage and the front door. A large rock thrown into window of a garage bay door finally provided an egress inside, where Steve Laite’s office was trashed in a vain search for valuables, including state inspection stickers. Down at the harbor, a cash register was stolen from Harbor Dogs, another take-out food stand.
Donaher has not been charged in those crimes.
Last week, Michelle Etheridge, 29, of Rockport, was arrested and charged with class C theft, a felony. Etheridge is accused of taking money from a Camden restaurant, where she was employed at the time.
Andrick said Etheridge is accused of stealing approximately $1,500 in cash from the restaurant.
“It’s a felony because the amount taken was more than $1,000,” said Andrick.
Police were also able to apprehend a Thomaston man, after a Mechanic Street commercial building owner reported ongoing issues with trespassing.
Following an investigation, Andrick was able to secure an arrest warrant for Kyle Scribner, 23, who was arrested in Thomaston by Thomaston Police.
Scribner was arrested Aug. 16 and charged with criminal trespass.
