CAMDEN — Camden native and former CYC member Jamie Van Alstine and his wife, Jill Peacock, who hails from Saint John, New Brunswick, will recount their family’s 2023–2024 Atlantic circuit during a free Sunset Seminar presentation Wednesday, July 10, at 7  p.m., at the Camden Yacht Club.

The couple, who have sailed over 8,000 miles in the past year, will chart their journey from the UK to Maine via the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and the Caribbean. Based in the United Kingdom, Van Alstine and Peacock have sailed “home” in their Chuck Paine-designed Bowman, Cupid, to share their childhood sailing grounds with their two daughters.

Van Alstine and Peacock are lifelong sailors based in the United Kingdom. They have sailed extensively in northern Europe, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, the US east coast, and Atlantic Canada. Their usual summer cruising ground is the west coast of Scotland. After they cruise Maine in July, they will head to Canada and eventually Scotland, where they will resettle after a year's sabbatical from their jobs.

Van Alstine is an associate professor of environmental policy at the University of Leeds, and Jill is a marketing leader at a consultancy firm. Originally from Camden, Van Alstine spent nearly a decade teaching outdoor education at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. Peacock is originally from Saint John, New Brunswick, and grew up on boats on the Saint John River and the Bay of Fundy. They have two girls, Ella (11) and Alexandra (6), who have earned their sea legs on this family adventure.

The Yacht Club, located at 68 Bay View Street, hosts the non-profit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP), which is open to all young people in the community. Voluntary donations for CAYSP’s generous scholarships, which make sailing lessons affordable to all, will be gratefully accepted at the seminar.
