Rockland Police Department: ‘There is no excuse for domestic abuse’
Thu, 10/06/2022 - 5:30pm
In recognition of Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, Rockland Police Department offered the following thoughts on its Facebook page:
October is Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month. This is a time to bring attention to the sad reality that Domestic Violence is more prevalent, more harmful and more deadly than most want to believe. Year to date, Rockland Police have responded to over 100 calls for service related to domestic violence. This is approximately 10% increase from the same time last year.
Domestic Violence is something that has no boundaries and effects people across all ages, races, occupations and socioeconomic statuses. Domestic Violence remains under reported and is far too often looked at as a “private” matter. This is NOT a private matter, and one that we as a society need to work together to stop.

It is important to remember that domestic violence can be, and often is, more than just physical violence. It includes threats or coercion, verbal & emotional abuse, blaming & putting down, economic and social isolation and involves all forms of unwanted power and control. “Gas lighting” or psychological manipulation, threats of self-harm or promises it will never happen again, often go hand-in-hand with/or are a precursors to physical violence.
Please, if you or someone you know are in an abusive relationship, reach out, get help. You are not alone.
If you have children who are of dating age, talk to them about domestic violence, let them know where they can turn to for help and teach them the signs of an unsafe relationship.
Are you reading this and wondering how you can get involved? Many of the great organizations to help survivors of Domestic Violence run on volunteers and donations to meet the need of those in need. Call or email them today to see what you can do to help others!
