ST. GEORGE — A camper ignited in flames that shot up over the neighborhood along a stretch of Route 73 in St. George this afternoon, while a stiff southwest breeze fanned the fire.

Peter Clapp, owner of Star Boat Company, said he was working in his boat shop when he noticed smoke next door, at approximately 4:35 p.m.

He went to the scene, finding that a recreational vehicle had caught fire. While the owners called Knox Regional Communications Center for help, two good samaritans were using a hose to cool the flames.

Volunteer St. George firefighters drove one of the engines from the nearby fire station to the RV, followed by additional engines and an ambulance.

With the wind blowing, firefighters were concerned about other RVs nearby, possibly equipped with propane tanks.

By 5:15 p.m., “things were very under control and the fire pretty much out,” said Clapp. “Not much left of the RV.”
