Owls Head motorcyclist walks away from bike-shattering crash in Rockport

ROCKPORT — An Owls Head man walked away from a crash late Monday morning that broke his motorcycle in half and sent him and pieces of debris across a Mill Street yard in Rockport.
Vernon Kvorjak, 24, was driving his 2006 Suzuki GSXR600 west on Mill Street around 11 a.m. June 10, when he crested the hill near the entrance to Bonnie's Maine Made Treasures and encountered an oncoming car turning into a driveway.
Camden resident Jeffrey Zurkow, 61, was driving east on Mill Street, up the incline approaching Bonnie's driveway when he stopped to turn left into the Anderson's driveway at 276 Mill St.
"I've been staying there for the winter and was coming back to check on the house and looked to see if the cleaning van was still in the driveway and it wasn't so I started to turn," said Zurkow. "I didn't see the motorcycle until he hit me."
Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley said it appears that Kvorjak's motorcycle took a glancing blow off the front end of Zurkow's Saab stationwagon, sending the motorcycle off the road.
It's likely the impact of the bike hitting the ground caused the frame to break clean in half at the welds.
"I went rolling across the lawn," said Kvorjak. "It happened really fast, and I can't believe I'm standing here. It's unreal."
Rockport Fire responded along with Camden First Aid, but Kvorjak denied being injured and refused transport. He was wearing a helmet, which could be seen laying off to the side on the grass along with a jacket.
"I'll bet when the adrenalin wears off, he'll be sore tomorrow," said Kelley.
Zurkow said he didn't know how Kvorjak wasn't injured, given the extreme damage to the bike, but he also said the motorcycle driver did not hit his car or go up and over it after the impact.
"I don't know how the hell I didn't see him," said Zurkow. "One minute he wasn't there and the next minute he was."
No charges were filed, following the accident. Kvorjak's father was en route to remove the vehicle from the scene, and damage to the Saab was minimal.
