Jeff Kellar artwork to display in Belfast gallery

BELFAST — Maine artist Jeff Kellar has long explored what he calls “the perceptual puzzle posed by form, space, surface, illusion, and light.” His minimalist paintings, made from a combination of resin, clay, and pigment, are built up in layers that can look opaque or transparent.
“The result is beautiful surfaces that have depth, warmth, and intensity,” said Perimeter Gallery, in a news release. “While rendered with extreme precision, his work simultaneously reveals the artist’s hand.”
From September 14 through October 30, Kellar’s paintings can be viewed at Perimeter Gallery at Chase’s Daily, 96 Main Street, in Belfast. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. A reception and artist talk is planned for early October.
Kellar’s reductive abstractions present his impressions of the visual world, the natural world and the built environment. Stripes may create the essence of light in landscapes and seascapes, or the way that an interior changes with the movement of sunlight across it. Often his paintings are made with subtle color contrasts, giving the viewer a sense of slow progression that is felt even more than seen, said the Gallery.
Jeff Kellar exhibits his work nationally, internationally, and in Maine has shown repeatedly at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Museum, Icon Contemporary Art, and Corey Daniels Gallery. Additionally, he has created public art for a number of Maine schools and state buildings through the Maine Percent for Art Program. In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Adolf and Ester Gottlieb Grant.
