A car wash that was tutu funny

Camden– Rockport Dance Conservatory owner/director Kari Cameron needed a hook to get people to stop for her carwash at Key Bank in the Hannaford Plaza on Saturday, May 19. The carwash was a fundraiser for RDC’s upcoming show at the Camden Opera House, Seusse is Loose, based on the stories of Doctor Seusse.
“We’re doing the carwash as a fundraiser and we’re looking for sponsors, plus we’re trying to teach the kids to be a little more involved,” said Cameron. “It’s fun for them and they have the support of the group to help each other. And they’ve learned, they’ve learned to go in as a group and ask business to support them and be sponsors. When you’re a kid and you’re by yourself is one thing, but when you’re with a group and have a buddy system it’s great and you have a good, fun time.”
A tutu is a skirt worn as a costume in a ballet performance, often with attached bodice. It might be single layer, hanging down, or multiple layers starched and jutting out. There are actually several types of tutus depending on the style of dance you’re doing. Think the classical Degas paintings and you’ve got it.
RDC is located in the Midcoast Recreation Center and teaches ballet, hip-hop, creative movement and tap for all ages and you might remember them from Dancing With the Local Stars in April. They will custom design their classes around the students.
“The tutus are so much fun for the girls,” said Cameron. “It’s a birthday color, it gets attention and as you can see they love them. We were planning the show before we knew it was the educational choice for reading this year, so that made us feel really good about the show.”
The show will feature original choreography set to the Suesse classics and will involve all age groups from the Conservatory.
“It’s really a family show this year, because we have such a younger group,” she said. “ We tried not to use music from Seussical type shows and we searched a lot to find songs that fit. We actually found a hip-hop Green Eggs and Ham song, so it worked out really well. It’s going to be a good show and the kids have just had a great time being part of it.”
And what happens after the car wash? She took me literally.
“Sally Leighton and I are going to go and probably sew costumes the rest of the day and into the night,” she said. “There’s a lot to be done.”
