Work begins on Belfast Harbor Walk

BELFAST - Workers from Maine Earth, of Hampden, were busy laying down a double row of tall screening shrubs between Belfast Common and Steamboat Landing Monday in the first substantial work on the Belfast Harbor Walk project.
The estimated $1.5 million pedestrian and bicycle promenade is to span roughly two-thirds of a mile from Steamboat Landing at its southern end to the Armistice footbridge. Portions of the path would follow the old railroad corridor through Marshall Wharf and Front Street Shipyard.
City officials have used the word "connectivity" frequently in relation to the corridor, which will connect existing municipal amenities like parks and the footbridge to each other while passing through commercial areas that would likely benefit from more foot traffic.
A second phase of the Harbor Walk project may include improvements on across the river on Footbridge Road.
City offices were closed on Monday in observance of Patriots Day, however speaking earlier this month, City Planner Wayne Marshall said construction of the pathway portion of the Harbor should be finished by early June. Lighting and amenities including benches would follow, he said, with additional landscaping scheduled for the fall.
