ROCKLAND — Sidecountry Sports owners Andrew Dailey and Brian Kelley have pledged of $10,000 to the Georges River Land Trust trails program.

Georges River Land Trust manages more than 60 miles of trails. 

Recently, the land trust started building multi-use trails in the Thomaston Town forest. This summer, Georges River Land Trust is completing a second phase. These trails are aimed at entry into outdoor sports, and allow youth to ride their bikes on trails that have been optimized through removal of roots and rocks which sometimes deter people from trying mountain biking. 

“Sidecountry Sports goes above and beyond by providing staff time to the trail and showing up with demo bikes for people to try,” said GRLT in a news release.

Georges River Land Trust, the Midcoast Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association, Sidecountry Sports, Stonescape Masonry, and Oceanside Middle School are currently collaborating on phase two of the project. This phase will be open to the public in October and will be groomed for winter use.

Oceanside Middle School was the recipient of the Riding for Focus grant from the Specialized Foundation. The school has been awarded 36 mountain bikes through the grant for physical education and after school programs to use cycling as a tool for students to achieve academic, health and social success. The Riding for Focus program will provide a combination of cycling, fitness and academic performance, all while instilling a lifelong passion for the outdoors for students who participate in the program. 

The project needs support through contributions and volunteering that continues to build momentum.
