BROOKS/BEALS ISLAND — Lois G. Merchant joined the angels on March 26, 2018 at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast. 

She was born September 7, 1935 at Beals Island the daughter of Ulysses W. and Gladys M. (Bell) Merchant.  Lois graduated from Beals High School.  She moved to Belfast at the age of 23 and went to work at Maplewood Poultry where she remained until it closed.  She worked for US Postal Service in Hampden until she retired. 

Lois kept busy with her VFW Auxiliary 6131 of Northport who she thought of as family.  She was an excellent mentor.  She became a life member on August 12, 2007.  Lois had been a patient at Tall Pines for the past year.  She enjoyed the company of many former workers.  Bingo was the highlight of her day.  She loved her "Red Sox", music and the Celtics.

She was predeceased by her brothers, James and Morrill Merchant. Lois is survived by her brother, Rev. Jesse Merchant Sr. and wife Bettina of Jonesport; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend, Nellie "Betty" Farris as well as all her sisters and brothers from VFW, and many friends. She loved the joy found in young children.

Thank you to the caregivers at Tall Pines, doctors and nurses at Waldo County Hospital as well as Hospice services.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. May 5th at the Northport VFW with a reception to follow.
