Youth Art Exhibition on display at Page Gallery in February
CAMDEN — Who or what do you think of when asked about your neighbor? Is it the friendly dog on its daily walk by your home, the chickadees in your backyard, a favorite maple tree in autumn? Does it bring to mind a little library filled with books to share, the smell of a backyard cookout, a relative or a friend?
Page Gallery is inviting children to consider these questions in their call for "neighbor" art to adorn the gallery's walls this winter. The exhibition will open on February 1 and will be on display through February 28.
The gallery is offering free postcards at 23 Bay View Street in Camden and is distributing them through art programs in local schools with a prompt for children of all ages to draw, paint, or collage their neighbor. Finished postcards can be dropped off or mailed to the gallery for installation in this special exhibition. In addition to celebrating the community's young artists, gallery visitors will be invited to engage in art projects throughout the exhibition, including an interactive collage of Camden's neighborhoods.
Twenty art students from Camden Hills Regional High School will recreate a collaborative mural after Marguerite Zorach's (1887-1968) seminal painting, Land and Development. Each student has been assigned a panel to replicate their part of the image in the medium of their choice, with a focus on matching value and color. Panels of collage will connect to panels of paint, resulting in a mural measuring more than 8 feet high and 4 feet wide. Zorach's work is held in permanent collections of major museums nationwide, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Portland Museum of Art, and Farnsworth Art Museum. The mural's installation will be complete by February 14.
In collaboration with the Camden Public Library, the gallery will host two special events in February. Children's librarian, Miss Amy, will convene a neighbor-themed storytime, Saturday, February 15, from 10 -11 a.m., and a Creative Art Afternoon, Thursday, February 20, from 4 -5 p.m. Both events will be held at Page Gallery. They are free and all are welcome to attend.
