World AIDS Day candlelight vigil in Belfast, Dec. 1
BELFAST — Join others to remember those we have lost and honor those who are living with HIV/AIDS. There will be a candlelight vigil on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4:30 - 5 p.m., in front of the Post Office in Belfast.
December 1 is the 36th anniversary of World AIDS Day, and the theme this year globally, is "Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress" around the world.
Lack of equity in the world continues with nations who are facing the effects of war and climate crises and millions of displaced people, at most risk.
"And here in the United States we are seeing the increased risk of new HIV spread through the attacks on the Gay community and women , as well as the opioid epidemic," said Meredith Bruskin, in a news release. "We come together Dec. 1 to express solidarity with the worldwide fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to remember the people we have lost."
Camp Chrysalis, a summer camp for 15 years for children and families affected by HIV/AIDS here in Maine, continues to support the camp family who thrive with HIV and remember the many loved ones we have lost.
"We are no longer an 'active' camp, gratefully, because access to treatment and prevention in the US means we are not seeing children born with HIV in Maine," said Bruskin. "This is our goal worldwide. But Maine still has new cases of adult HIV every year."
