Windy storm barrels through the Midcoast with heavy rain, stealing the snow

    The storm that blew through Maine Saturday, Jan. 16, dumped heavy, wet snow in the western mountains, drenched the coast with rain, and made for fierce winds that downed some trees into wires. Along the immediate coastline, flooding and splashier occurred around 1 p.m., at high tide.

    Reports of trees down in Warren and Friendship sent power crews and firefighters out to clean roads and restore electricity. Vinalhaven was without power, and in Washington, the roads were getting slick, as rain turned to snow.

    It was a fast-moving storm with rapid barometer pressure drops that tracked up the East Coast, approaching with strong east, southeast winds.

    The Midcoast saw the heavy gusts of throughout the afternoon. By evening, the rain had stopped, taking with it the scarce bit of snow that had been covering the ground, and the winds had calmed.

    The weather on Sunday calls for cooling temperatures and a brisk wind out of the west.
