ROCKLAND — Walter C. Hill, 75, died May 17, 2014, at Waldo County General Hospital after an extended illness.

Born in Dover, N.H., Feb. 7, 1939, he was the son of Harold O. and Emma G. Pierce Hill. At a young age, the family returned to the homestead in Rockland, where he resided for more than 72 years. He attended local schools and graduated from Rockland High School with the Class of 1957.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rockland and was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 204 at the church.

Following high school, Walt went to work with Sam Small, learning the butchering trade in which he worked until being drafted into the U.S. Army.

Returning home after his service, Walt began employment as a butcher at Jordan's Market in Rockland, where he worked until the closing of that store. He then worked at Rockland's IGA until the closing of that store.

Walt enjoyed building model airplanes, ships and cars, and doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed watching football, particularly the Redskins; having played in high school.

Predeceased by his father, Walt is survived by his mother, Emma Hill of Rockland; his sister, Avis I. Sedgwick and her husband, Linwood Jr., of Rockland; his nieces and nephews, Glenn Hill and his wife, Patricia, of Rockport, Maureen Glidden and her husband, Dave, of Biddeford, Linwood Sedgwick III of Rockland, Pamela Lewis and her husband, Patrick, of West Roxbury, Mass., and Timothy Sedgwick of Rockland; as well as several great- and great great-nieces and nephews and many cousins.

A funeral service with military honors will be held Tuesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. The Rev. Robert Bell will officiate.
