Waldo County Conservation District plant sale has begun

Wed, 03/16/2022 - 3:15pm

Waldo County Soil & Water Conservation District’s (the District) plant sale is up and running, according to the District, in a news release.

This year, the District will hold its Plant Sale and Order Pickup in conjunction with a “Homestead Day” at Maine TradeHers in Unity.

“Along with trees, shrubs, perennials and vegetables, you’ll find locally made products offered by your favorite farm and craft vendors,” said the District. “In keeping with this homesteading theme, we have selected plants that provide fruits, nuts, medicinals and other useful products for independent-minded people.”

Basswood is great for pollinators and wildlife, is lovely to look at, great for carving, and has medicinal value, according to the release. Shagbark Hickory is an ornamental tree that provides food for wildlife as well as fuelwood and forest products.

Ordering and payment are available on the website (https://waldocountysoilandwater.org/) where you can also download a copy of the Plant Catalog. Plant pick-up as well as Cash ‘n Carry sales (for some additional inventory not listed online) will be held at Maine TradeHers Market, 956 Albion Rd., Unity, on Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. - Noon. If you need assistance ordering online, feel free to call the office on Wednesdays at 218-5311.

The Plant Sale is a fundraiser for the District, which returns proceeds back to the community in the form of conservation education, technical and other assistance to local citizens, municipalities and the agricultural community.

“Plus, the event is a wonderful chance to meet and greet each other after a long winter,” said the District.
