Vote on your school budget, Tuesday!

MIDCOAST - School budgets don't typically bring voters to the polls in droves, but deep cuts coupled with tax increases in many districts may make this year an exception to the rule.
On Tuesday, June 11, voters will be asked to approve or reject their local school district's bottom line in validation referendums around the state.
They will also be asked if they want to vote by referendum on future budgets or have the public budget meeting, in which the 11 cost centers are approved (often with amendments) in a town hall format, should be the last word.
A vote to continue the referendum does so for another three years starting with the 2014-15 budget. Likewise, a vote to discontinue it would prevent the process from being reconsidered for another three years.
For information on additional ballot questions, see below. For voting hours and locations, contact local town offices.
Belfast, Belmont, Morrill, Northport, Searsmont and Swanville - Voters will be asked if they want to withdraw from Regional School Unit 20. Prior to a 2009 consolidation, the six municipalities made up School Administrative District 34. The towns each approved measures last year to seek a withdrawal from RSU 20, which includes former SAD 56 towns Frankfort, Searsport and Stockton Springs. Collectively supporters hope to re-form a version of the preconsolidation district. For that to be successful, voters must not only approve the withdrawal in all six towns but total voter turnout must be equal to 50-percent of the number that voted in the last gubernatorial election.
