Vernon E. Stanley, obituary
ST. GEORGE — Vernon E. "Bun" Stanley, 92, of St. George, died peacefully on Feb. 24, 2017, surrounded by family at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.
Born in St. George on May 26, 1924, he was number 10 of 14 children of Oscar and Ethel Wilson Stanley. He attended local schools.
On July 7, 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served with the 145th Infantry as a tank gun crewman. For his service and wounds received in battle, Vernon was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from active duty on Dec. 25, 1945.
On Oct. 29, 1947, he married Doreen Hupper. The couple made their home and raised their family in St. George.
As a young man he worked at Snow's Shipyard in Rockland to help support his brothers and sisters until he was drafted. Later he helped build Lehtinen's Boat Shop in Tenants Harbor and worked there as a master caulker for many years until his retirement.
He enjoyed gardening and raising veggies, hunting, refinishing furniture, and waving to the many teachers and students going to the school throughout the years.
Predeceased by his son, Gregory Stanley in 1971; as well as his siblings, Emma Lehtinen, Verita Hyvarinen, Clyde Stanley, Dwinal Stanley, Arnold Stanley, Carleton Stanley, Norman Stanley, June Cullen, Frances Thompson, Cecil Stanley and Maurice Stanley; and his daughter-in-law, Lynn Stanley; Vernon is survived by his wife, Doreen of St. George; his children and their spouses, Carla and Charles Cumming of Bolton Landing, N.Y., Claudia and Dario Ramirez of Plainville, Conn., Bruce Stanley of St. George, and Ellen and Richard Freeman of Tenants Harbor; his grandchildren, David Cumming, Nicole VanVuren, Ashlee Reynolds and Kelsey Freeman; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Charlie, Sarah, Henry, Owen, Rose, Aubrey and Alison; his siblings, Edna Carter of Thomaston and Ann Wallace of Thomaston; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors is planned for Friday, June 16, 2017, at South Parish Cemetery on Ridge Road in Martinsville.
