Vernal Pool Walk at Freedom Forest Preserve
Join the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust and Maine Master Naturalists Mary Ellen Dennis and Cyrene Slegona Saturday, April 26, to explore the beautiful series of vernal pools at Freedom Forest Preserve, one of our Forever Wild Preserves.
Look for egg masses and larvae of the spotted salamander and wood frog — vernal-pool dependent amphibians that migrate during rainy nights in early spring to breed in these temporary but highly significant wetland habitats.
Walk the new side loop trail built last year and seek out other signs of spring awakening.
Meet at the trailhead on North Palermo Road in Freedom at 9 a.m. and anticipate completing the walk by noon.RSVP at sebasticookrlt.org/events-news.
Sebasticook Regional Land Trust (SRLT) is a membership-supported conservation group working to conserve and restore the Sebasticook River Watershed in Central Maine. SRLT focuses on land conservation, habitat restoration and environmental education, working with landowners to help them voluntarily protect their land for future generations. Since 2004, the SRLT and its landowner partners have ensured the permanent protection of over 4,000 acres of wild and working lands. Learn more at sebasticookrlt.org.
