WALDOBORO — A portion of Route 1 in Waldoboro reopened to traffic at 7 p.m., after being closed for four hours in the afternoon, Aug. 28, 2023, due to a motor vehicle crash. A reconstruction team was called to Route 1 in Waldoboro, Monday afternoon, as police continue working to determine the circumstances that led to a fatal car crash.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred just north of Moody’s Diner, and closed Route 1 from approximately 2:40 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The Waldoboro Fire Department, Waldoboro Ambulance Service, Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office (reconstruction) and Brunswick PD (drone mapping) assisted Waldoboro Police, according to WPD Chief Scott Lash.
The operator of a 2000 Chevy Camaro, Paul Thompson, 78, of Waldoboro died at the scene. The other vehicle was a 1987 Volkswagon Vanagan operated by Louis Tay of Ontario. Tay and his three passengers were uninjured.
Warren firefighters are diverting southbound traffic down the Old Route 1, just inside the Warren-Waldoboro town line. Warren responders, who tended to a crash the night before on Camden Road, were contacted today at approximately 2:55 p.m. to help with traffic control at today’s Waldoboro incident.
