UMaine Extension offers workshops on managing parasite risk in small ruminants at multiple locations
University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer Small Ruminant Meningeal and Lung Worm workshops at three locations this fall/winter, all from 10 a.m. - noon:
-Spring Creek Farm, 65 Drown Lane, Lyman on November 23, 2025;
-Hancock County UMaine Extension office, 63 Boggy Brook Rd., Ellsworth on December 7, 2025;
-UMaine Augusta, 284 Jewett Hall on January 17, 2026.
The workshops feature a lecture on the risk and management of meningeal worm (brain worm), a mysterious and often deadly parasite of small ruminants. Farmers will learn how to recognize the symptoms of the worm in livestock and effective prevention strategies. Participants will also gain hands-on experience by setting up a Baermann apparatus, the diagnostic method used to detect lungworms, and practicing microscope techniques.
