STOCKTON SPRINGS - A head-on collision Sunday afternoon has left two people dead and three injured.

According to a statement from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, a green Dodge Intrepid driven by Denise Shuck of Ohio crossed the centerline of Route 1 striking a black Dodge van driven by Sarah Thompson of Morrill and carrying three passengers.

Shuck was pronounced dead at the scene.

Thompson and all three of her passengers were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. One of the passengers, Frederick Carter, 65, of Morrill, died later that evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The accident was reported at 4:54 p.m. and originally described as having occurred in Prospect, according to the statement from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Kevin Littlefield, Deputy Daniel Thompson and Detective Gerald Lincoln responded to the scene along with the Stockton Springs Fire Department and ambulance, Prospect Fire Department and the Bucksport Ambulance Service.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Sheriff’s deputies.

“Obviously the the direct cause of the accident was that Ms. Shuck crossed the center line,” Waldo County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeffrey Trafton said Monday.

”She was alone in the vehicle, and so far at this point we haven’t been able to catch up with anybody who saw her before the accident,” he said.

Trafton said officials are attempting to contact Shuck’s family in Ohio in hopes of learning any relevant information, and are also awaiting results from blood tests to determine if the driver was under the influence of any substance at the time of the crash.
