Tri-Town Music Program accepting applications
The little after-school music program for elementary school aged students living in Morrill, Belmont and Searsmont returns in 2025 for a 4th year.
Started by Searsmont Town Library and Belfast Flying Shoes in spring 2022, the Tri-Town Music Program is fully funded by BFS and the Friends of Searsmont Library making it 100% free for the students who make good use of the opportunity. Instruments are borrowed from the library for the duration of the classes.
This year the limited space classes are being run twice a week for five weeks to create a more immersive education for the students.
“A music class once a week can present retention issues for the student, especially after a full day in school," said library director, Steven Brown, in a news release. "By presenting a short, intensive experience, skills can more easily be built upon and we’re trying to build on what the kids are already getting from their classroom teacher."
“Research indicates that young people who engage in musical activity benefit in their personal growth as well as the development of functions in both sides of the brain," said the release. "Learning to play music makes all learning easier! But there's a problem: musical education is limited in the public school system and access to private instruction is often impossible for less-affluent households.”
The Tri-Town Music Program aims to decrease these gaps by providing this opportunity.
Teachers Jeff Densmore and Mr. Brown (percussion for grades 2 and 3) and Ethan Tischler (ukulele for grades 4 and 5) lead the classes.
“Besides being gifted performers, Jeff and Ethan also have extensive teaching experience,” said Chrissy Fowler, of Belfast Flying Shoes.
Students learn together but will need to individually demonstrate skills in class. Classes work towards learning songs in ensemble but solo practice is necessary at home.
In order to provide a quality musical experience and individual attention for each participant, space is limited. Parents of interested students should complete an application form available at Ames School or the Searsmont Town Library. Permanent residency in Searsmont, Morrill, or Belmont is required.
Applications are due by January 10. Classes begin the following Tuesday, January 14.
