Three first responders honored after Bucksport drowning
BUCKSPORT — A state police lieutenant, a Bucksport police officer, and Bucksport's fire chief have been honored by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association for their role last summer attempting to save the life of a young boy who fell into the Penobscot River in Bucksport.
The five-year-old fell from the town wharf, and the boy's grandfather dove in after him last August. Both later died.
State Police Lt. Rod Charette, the commanding officer for Troop J in Ellsworth; Bucksport Police Officer Dan Harlan; and Bucksport Fire Chief Craig Bowden dove into the river and retrieved the boy's body; They then administered CPR.
Although the boy briefly regained consciousness, he died enroute to the hospital. The grandfather's body was recovered later in the day.
Charette, Harlan, and Bowden were presented with bravery awards at the chief's annual winter meeting held in South Portland last week. The trio were nominated for the honor by Bucksport Police Chief Sean Geagan.
