Thomaston sets special election date for empty select board seat

Wed, 06/26/2019 - 11:00am

THOMASTON — A special election for the open select board seat in Thomaston has been set for late August.

Thomaston voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Aug. 27, to vote in a replacement for Beverly St. Clair, who resigned from her select board seat June 12.

“It is with regret I respectfully submit my resignation from the position of Selectwoman effective immediately,” St. Clair wrote in her resignation letter.

“I will just say that there are many unanswered questions here in Thomaston,” she wrote in statement to “I guess at this point, I have more questions than answers.”

At its regular select board meeting June 24, the remaining select board members accepted her resignation and established the special election timeline.

Nomination papers will be available starting Monday, July 1, and will be due Friday, July 19, at 2 p.m. Papers are available at and are to be returned to the Town Office.

Nomination papers must contain not less than 25 or more than 100 signatures of registered voters of the Town of Thomaston to be included on the ballot.

The seat’s term will expire in 2021.

At the June 24 meeting, the select board also acknowledged receipt of a recall petition that had been circulated in the town prior to St. Clair’s resignation.

The petition received 147 signatures, though only 141 of those came from registered voters.

Since St. Clair resigned, the town moves to a special election rather than a vote on the recall petition.
