THOMASTON — A day removed from its June elections and changes continue to happen at the municipal level in Thomaston. 

The town has been shaken by recent political unrest that included the May resignation of longtime town manager Val Blastow and nearly losing the town’s police department. 

Now, the town’s Select Board has one less member serving. 

Beverly St. Clair resigned effectively immediately June 12 via email from her position as one of five members of the board. 

“It is with regret I respectfully submit my resignation from the position of Selectwoman effective immediately,” St. Clair wrote in her resignation letter. 

“I will just say that there are many unanswered questions here in Thomaston,” she wrote in statement to penbaypilot.com. “I guess at this point, I have more questions than answers.”

Thomaston Town Clerk Kara George noted June 13 the remaining Select Board members will have to take up St. Clair’s resignation at a board meeting before any steps can be taken for a replacement. The next scheduled meeting is June 24. 

A vote among the selectmen will need to be held to accept the resignation. Should the board accept the resignation, a special election will be called to elect St. Clair’s replacement with the nomination paper window opening late June or early July. 

At the polls June 11, voters reelected Bill Hahn to the board and elected Sandra Moore as Peter McCrea’s replacement on the board. 

Board of Assessors Seat 

Residents taking to the polls in Tuesday’s election elected Scott Johnson onto the Board of Assessors with 448 votes. He was the lone declared candidate for the seat. 

In a midday email June 12 to George and Peter Lammert, the Select Board chairman, Johnson announced his intention to decline the three-year appointment. 

“In consideration to all that has taken place politically against me and my business from the time I returned my nomination papers[,] I feel it would be best for all involved if I respectfully withdraw from the Assessors position for the town of Thomaston,” he wrote. 

Johnson is a co-owner of Thomaston Recycling with St. Clair. 

George stated the seat on the Board of Assessors can be appointed by members of the Select Board.
