SPRUCE HEAD — The Craignair Art Gallery announces an exhibition entitled “Third Watch” by Spruce Head artist Katharine Cartwright from July 28 through August 22. This series of India ink drawings depicts the standing and running rigging on tall ships that she sailed in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Cartwright states in a news release: “My focus is on the beautiful and elegant designs made by ropes and lines on these historic vessels where traditional seamanship is practiced even today.”

Some of the detailed drawings contain more than 40,000 pen strokes.

Cartwright’s paintings have been featured in international exhibitions winning top awards and in hundreds of private and corporate collections, according to the release. Her works have also been featured in notable publications such as  Pratiques des Arts, Art Scope Magazine, Visual Language Magazine, Best of Worldwide Watermedia,, and A Walk Into Abstracts. The Maine Arts Commission recently exhibited her work in the State House in Augusta, Maine. Notably, Cartwright served as the artist consultant and designer of the exterior mural model at the Mid-coast School of Technology in Rockland, according to the release.
