Suzanne Widener Scott, obituary
Suzanne Widener Scott died on June 21, 2025 at the age of 72 after a ten-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Her passing was marked by a loving vigil of close family, including her devoted husband, Leamon, who was with her until her last moments.
Suzanne was born on July 10, 1952 in Lyons, Georgia, to Ronald and Annie Lois (Dowda) Widener. She married Leamon Scott, her high school sweetheart, on August 4, 1973, and the two enjoyed 51 joyful years together, including two children, Lea Anne and Jonathan.
Suzanne’s deep and abiding love of music led her down a path of art and service. She graduated from Lyons High School in 1970 and earned a Bachelor of Church Music degree from Shorter College in Rome, Georgia, and a Master of Music degree in organ performance from the University of Georgia. Suzanne enjoyed a rich and varied musical career, serving as Organist and Music Associate and Director of Music in Metro Atlanta Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches.
Always challenging herself, Suzanne later owned and operated Opus 1 Music, a classical sheet music store in Decatur and Rome, Georgia, which served thousands of musicians, particularly music students, in the area. She also directed Rome’s 50-member community choir, The Three River Singers.
Later in her career, Suzanne turned her attention to supporting the collegiate community that she loved, working as Interim Alumni Director at Shorter College before serving as Development Officer and later, Acting VP of Development and Alumni. Next, Suzanne worked at Berry College as a Senior Advancement Officer, retiring from this role in 2014.
She was an active member of Sevel Hills Rotary and served on the board of the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation. As a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rome, Suzanne started their children’s choir program, served as substitute organist and on the vestry, sang in the adult choir, and chaired the Stewardship Campaign.
Suzanne was a lifelong Georgian until moving to Camden, Maine, in July 2015, where she and her family had vacationed for many years. Even in retirement, Suzanne continually gave back to her community. She joined the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Adult Choir, served on the vestry, and volunteered in the church office; and became a member of the West Bay Rotary, served on Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School’s Board of Trustees and Co-Chaired their Development Committee for several years. Notably, Suzanne was part of the team that decided to build Bay Chamber’s new home and concert hall in Camden.
In 2022, Suzanne and Leamon moved to The Highlands Retirement Community in Topsham, Maine.
Both she and Leamon are only children. Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Annie Lois, and is survived by her husband, Leamon; daughter, Lea Anne Atwell, son-in-law, Ian Atwell, and their grandson, Aiden, and granddaughter, Amelia, in Nashua, New Hampshire; her son, Jonathan Scott, daughter-in-law, Chelsea Scott, and granddaughters, Adeline and Tallulah, in Newcastle, Maine; and many loving cousins and extended family. They would like to thank the staff of The Highlands Memory Care and CHANS Home Health and Hospice for their professional and compassionate care of Suzanne up to and including her final hours.
A memorial service will be held in Rome, GA, to honor Suzanne and thank her community on Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m., at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, with a reception to follow in Daniel Hall.
In place of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Bay Chamber Concerts in Camden or Bath-Brunswick Respite Care in Bath.
