Stephen Ellis listens, seeks understanding, and values our rural community
The future of Maine’s economy needs policy makers who value civic participation and investment in our public institutions, like Stephen Ellis.
Ellis is a product of public schools, supported his children through public schools, and worked in public universities. He coached community cross country, track and field, soccer and baseball. Rural communities are strengthened when citizens participate in local community efforts. Ellis is a collaborative leader, demonstrated by his efforts on the Waldo Cemetery Committee, working with local and state agencies and the University of Maine to honor our history. He tries to understand community concerns from Swan Lake to Unity Pond.
Our current Representative lacks that spirit of collaboration. I reached out to Rep. Hymes to understand the intent and context behind the divisive legislation he sponsored. The Representative was cordial, but clearly neglected consideration for, and consultation with, parents of public-school children and school staff. It was astonishing that such destructive legislation would be sponsored so hastily.
Our communities face real challenges. They need forward-thinking, well-reasoned approaches that unite us. We must provide educational opportunities that value the trades and post-secondary paths. We need structural creativity to provide relief for local property taxpayers. We need serious folks doing serious work with care and intention.
Communities have been divided by hyperbole, mischaracterization, and sensationalism. Yet, Ellis listens, seeks understanding, and values our rural community. Please support Stephen Ellis. He is the right person for our Waldo County communities, and the right person for Maine.
