Song by song, Late Sorrow hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams
On April 1, Jake Nagy (AKA Late Sorrow) released a new song, "I'll Be Here For You Now", with inspiration from Oasis, Green Day, and other 90'alternative rock bands. He hired a drummer and made the song from scratch on guitar, bass and vocals. and Friday, April 8, he debuted it for the first time live at Rock Harbor in Rockland.
The song is available on all platforms, such as YouTube and Spotify, and is being played on a handful of radio stations.
The music made under Late Sorrow is a message to inspire others to pursue their dreams and to be able to feel that it's OK to have emotions, said Nagy.
“Reach out to a friend if you're ever in a rut, people value you and you are worth so much more than you know,” said Nagy.
He has been inspired by alternative artists such as blink-182, Simple Plan, Weezer, Evanescence, Green Day, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold, The Offspring Lil Peep, Juice WRLD, Post Malone etc., as well as a variety of artists in many different genres of the 90's such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden / Audioslave , Rage Against The Machine, Serj Tankian / System Of A Down, Nirvana, Radiohead, punk artists such as Ramones, Sex Pistols, NOFX, and Pop/Rock bands such as The Beatles, Queen, U2 and Billy Joel.
Jake Nagy moved to Rockland from Willimantic, Connecticut, in 2006 with his mother and younger brother when he was 12, and started his new journey of life into an area that was much more suitable for living comfortably at a young age.
Jake was always interested in music growing up, reciting songs he heard on MTV and VH1, and his mother loved that he was able to have an outlet to express himself. Jake's step-father in Connecticut saw his interest in music, and decided to give him his first guitar - a Fender Squier Stratocaster. As Jake states, "I was so happy that I could finally make some music of my own."
Jake learned some chords quickly, and got to learn a couple songs from bands he loved — Time Of Your Life by Green Day, and Come As You Are by Nirvana. He couldn't get tired of these songs, as they were a couple of his favorites.
Jake got to make some good friends pretty quickly through middle school, and in seventh grade he was asked to be a part of what became his first rock band.
The band was called Tastes Like Chicken, and he switched to bass guitar which he had never done before. He loved being able to play the low tones while the guitarists, Cole Barbour and Aaron Clarke hit the high notes and shredded solos while our drummer, Joe Njache beat the heck out of the drums.
Tastes Like Chicken played a variety of originals, as well as covers, and all sang background vocals while either Cole or Aaron took the lead vocals. Tastes Like Chicken played a number of shows and won the Trekkapalooza Battle of the Bands, first place the first year and second place the second year. They played plenty of shows throughout the years, and when the fire died out the three all still kept a friendship which was very meaningful to Jake.
After Tastes Like Chicken, Jake got right back into guitar where his music journey began.
He practiced both guitar and attentiveness, pardoning his ADHD and using it to his advantage to speed playing up in a way.
In 2013, one of Jake's good friends, Peyton Elise Feener (Now Peyton Elise Clark), from an LGBTQQA program he was involved with as an ally, asked if Jake wanted to start a band as a guitarist with her and her friend Emerson Woolf. Naturally, he said heck, yes!
Peyton, Emerson and Jake started practicing shortly after, and busked around Camden as well as played their first couple of shows which they performed both originals and covers for. They still didn't have a band name until Peyton came up with the idea of Drive By Todd. She heard something on the Bob & Sheri radio station and it inspired the name, and both Emerson and Jake thought it was really unique.
They started getting more gigs and got to record one of our first original songs "Evil Taxi Man", a song named after a taxi driver that was extremely late bringing Jake to one of DBT's concerts.
After a few years of performing together, Emerson respectfully decided to resign as the singer and rhythm guitarist.
Peyton and Jake wanted to keep the band alive, and they eventually got to have some fill in singers perform with them. Drive By Todd played a number of shows along the years, but weren't able to establish themselves as a dedicated band until around 2017, when they had a wedding booked but no singer.
Peyton had a friend, Joanna Grierson, at the Good Tern Co-op in Rockland, who sang and played guitar, and Jake was excited that they could all possibly play the wedding, after all.
Joanna, Peyton and Jake practiced a few times before the show, and when the time came for the wedding, Drive By Todd went over to the Camden Snow Bowl and played for the first time together with Joanna as the singer and rhythm guitarist; it was a big success.
Both Peyton and Jake really wanted to keep playing shows together, and Joanna seemed to like the vision of DBT. Since then, the three have played around 10 shows a year since 2017 as Peyton, Joanna and Jake, noting our performance with Rustic Overtones at the Camden Opera House, and their performance on Maine 207 TV in Portland.
Drive By Todd is still active and have spring and summer completely booked, getting ready to perform Blue in Portland April 22, All Roads Music Festival in Belfast May 21, and the Lobster Festival next year.
Jake was writing his own songs under his full name Jake Nagy for a number of years, singing while playing acoustic guitar. He was able to uploaded a few songs before having access to high quality recording. He had been inspired by many alternative rock bands growing up, such as Green Day/All American Rejects/Three Days Grace and many more, and decided to lean towards that genre with his solo music.
In 2019, when Jake was going through a tribulation of self doubt, one of his close friends told him that he needed to keep making music, and that he should create an artist name as opposed to using his full name.
Shortly after, Jake came up with the name Late Sorrow, hoping to inspire people believe in themselves.
Jake created his first song "Let Me Grieve" at a local studio in March 2019, blending guitar and vocals with a hip hop element, and released it on all music platforms through his first music distributor "DistroKid".
Shortly after, Jake went to his stepfather's studio in Connecticut to record his second single, "Dead Roses".
Using a 12-string acoustic guitar, a bass guitar, an electric guitar, a microphone and a drum machine, he and his stepfather recorded and released his second song.
In April 2019, Jake released his third single "Point(less)" and in July of 2019 released his fourth single "Last Goodbye", all while making connections online with his first fans and listeners.
Shortly after his release of "Last Goodbye", Jake had the opportunity to perform his first show as Late Sorrow in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Jake was then contacted by a manager where he was put under his first management and label with a handful of other artists.
Management helped create his first merchandise in the form of t-shirts. The label, "Deadboy Management", called to perform on a two-week tour, so Jake bought a plane ticket and headed to Texas where he played several nights of lineups as Late Sorrow in Austin, Houston, Amarillo, and a few other cities in the massive state.
Jake knew that he needed to do something more for Late Sorrow than release singles, and in 2020 released "Late Nights", a six-song EP with heartfelt songs about envisioning and accomplishing dreams, longing for a sense of comfort, and falling in love,
Noting passion filled lyrics such as "Don't give up now, don't give up now, I'd like to know you for a while" and "The darkest days are so bright when you're by my side" He released it on all platforms as Late Sorrow, and had physical copies of the EP made to hand out at shows.
Shortly after the release of Late Sorrow's EP, the management team disbanded, and Jake was once again an independent artist.
Another artist from the label was also based in Maine, and Jake had the opportunity to perform in Scarborough before Covid-19 hit. Jake used the time off of performing to his advantage, experimenting with the type of music that he wanted to make.
He collaborated with a handful of other artists on singles he released in August in September of 2020. Jake had always been inspired by acoustic guitar, and on October 4, 2020, released an acoustic version of his song "Last Goodbye".
In 2021, he released his first single of the year through Universal Music Publishing Group, a branch of Universal Music Group (UMG). The song "Who Am I To Judge" was mixed and mastered by award winning producer and engineer "Morgan Matthews".
Jake used his guitar playing skills to his advantage, and played a guitar solo in the song for the first time as Late Sorrow.
Jake had a brief pause of releasing music under Late Sorrow while continuing to perform and release music with Drive By Todd.
After 2021 went by and 2022 came around, he knew that he had to keep releasing music of his own and released my first single in February of 2022, "Cutting Ties". Jake was starting to get his creativity back, keeping his pen by his side.
Jake is in the process of releasing a full length CD under Late Sorrow, as well as booking more shows for the spring and summer.
Late Sorrow wants to help inspire others to work toward their goals in the music that he makes.
“You have a story you can tell whether it's through music or art or work,” he said. “You are here for a reason.”
