ROCKPORT - Roger David Jones, Sr., 90, passed peacefully late December 4, 2023 at the Sussman House in Rockport after a long illness.
Born September 4, 1933, to Oramon and Marion Armstrong Jones, Roger was a lifelong resident of Rockport. After attending local schools, he joined the United States Coast Guard and spent those four years on the Snohomish, keeping the Penobscot River ice-free. After leaving the Coast Guard in 1960, he went to barbering school in Lewiston where he began his lifelong career as a barber, following in the footsteps of his father and older brother, Allen. He worked in Rockland for a while and then in 1966, he joined with his younger brother, Lowell, for 25 years above Cappy's Chowder House and then above French & Brawn until 2019. At the age of 86, he decided to retire to help his wife.
Roger loved his town of Rockport and for many years served his town on the Board of Selectman, Budget Committee, Parks & Recreation Committee, Recreation Committee, and others. He was always ready to help his town in any way he could and was instrumental in the purchase of the Marge Jones Recreational property.
On October 17, 1956, Roger married the love of his life, Joanne Lofman. He had a deep love for his wife, his family, and his property on Beech Hill where he would hunt, garden, grow Christmas trees, and cut his own wood. Being surrounded by the Jones family was comforting to him, and he stayed there until very recently.
Roger is survived by his son Roger, Jr., and his wife Dianne of Englewood, Florida; his daughter Betsy French and her husband Jim of Rockport; his sister Carol Knapp and her husband Malcom of Lynnfield, Massachusetts; his grandchildren, Christie, Roger III, Danielle, Alex, and Marina; as well as several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2023 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Roger will be laid to rest privately beside his beloved wife at Rockville Cemetery, in the spring.
