Rockport girls raise money for Meals on Wheels

ROCKPORT — On August 6, at Tropical Nails in Rockport, it was another regular business day at the salon. The windows and doors were wide open, a breeze was circulating through the sunny rooms, clients were relaxing while having a manicure, pedicure, or another special beauty treatment.
But outside in the front yard that afternoon, two young girls dressed in colorful, dainty dresses, were holding handmade signs to flag down cars as they drove by on Route 1.
Kaida and Kaidi Nguyen, ages five and four respectfully, were hosting their second fundraiser for MCH Meals on Wheels in Rockland. They are the daughters of Tracie and Keith Nguyen, the owners of Tropical Nails.
The family came up with the idea of KK’s Corner as the name of their fundraising spot at the entrance to Tropical Nails.
The girls had a table selling freshly squeezed lemonade, homemade egg and spring rolls, cupcakes, and also raffle tickets that had been available for sale in the salon leading up to the event. The raffle prizes were a pair of Ray Ban aviator sunglasses and a tanning package at the salon.
By the end of the day, the girls raised $675 for the nonprofit that serves meals to adults and disabled individuals in Knox County, but the total raised to date is almost $800, which included the previous KK’s Corner event in June.
Tracie and the girls all had fun pitching in to make the spring rolls and lemonade. The cupcakes were made and donated by Leslie Eaton, of Camden.
Kaida and Kaidi said that people were very nice. Some were folks they knew, others were those who stopped by after seeing the signs.
Tracie said that people visiting the area stopped by KK’s Corner, including a couple from Missouri and an attorney from Louisiana, who donated $50.
A big treat for the girls was picking the winning raffle tickets. Since there were two prizes, both girls got to participate in the drawings.
Why did the Nguyens choose to support Meals on Wheels with so many other charities in the Mid Coast?
“A friend told me there really was a need with the cuts in government funding. We felt that they needed the extra support,” Tracie said.
The Nguyens would like to make this an annual fundraiser for Meals on Wheels. Tracie said that she believes it is important for Kaida and Kaidi to do something for the community.
With both of her daughters entering school this month, Tracie said that she hopes to get more people involved in the next fundraiser at KK’s Corner, like including the girls’ classmates, parents and community so they can raise more money in the future.
