Rockland police warn public of scam targeting small businesses, nonprofits
ROCKLAND — A local Rockland business has reported receiving a fake invoice, that at face value, appeared to be from the “Yellow Pages Directory” to renew their listing, according to a news release on the department’s Facebook page Sept. 17.
The invoice appeared to be legitimate, but after a closer look it was found that the account and phone numbers listed were incorrect.
Police said that Rockland is not immune to these type of scams since this type of mail scam is not uncommon, and is a nationwide problem that often targets small businesses and nonprofits.
They urge all businesses to be aware of this scam and similar ones, to review all invoices closely, compare the account numbers to past invoices and avoid giving financial information over the phone.
