ROCKLAND — Rockland firefighters, along with mutual aid assistance from Camden and Rockport, quickly extinguished an apartment fire at 21 Fulton Street in Rockland.

The call arrived mid-afternoon, June 5, of a report of smoke in an upstairs apartment. The smoke was showing from a second floor window of the apartment building.

Twenty firefighters, with equipment that included Rockland Tower 3, Rockland Squad 3, Rockland Engine 1, Rockland Rescue 2, Rockland Car 1, a Camden ladder truck and a Rockport engine arrived to tackle the fire, and stop its spread to other apartments.

“Thankfully, all occupants of the fire apartment were out and accounted for,” said Rockland Fire Chris Chris Whytock, in a news release. “With the fire in check, crews began to check for extension of the fire and also made sure the rest of the building had been evacuated.”

Fire damage was contained to the room or origin and the rest of the apartment sustained minimal water and smoke damage.  Approximately 150 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.  No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was attributed to the presence of smoking materials near combustibles.

When the tenant noticed fire in the apartment, she closed the door to the fire room, Chief Whytock said.

“This action alone prevented fire spread and further damage before the fire departments arrival,” he said. “Closed doors, even hollow core doors, can keep smoke, heat, and fire in check.”
