Robert Simmons, obituary
ROCKLAND – Robert D. “Bob” Simmons, 82, died peacefully Jan. 31, 2016, at home, with his wife at his side.
Born in Rockland on Feb. 22, 1933, he was the son of Harold and Carrie Teel Simmons. He was educated in Rockland schools.
As a young man, Bob moved “out West,” where he spent several years as a truck driver. Returning to Maine in the 1980s, he married Judith Bennett in Rockland on Jan. 7, 1984.
After getting married, Bob worked a few different jobs, but eventually settled in taking care of the home. He spent his days running errands, cooking and assisting with keeping the household going. Along with his wife, Bob made it his life's mission to take care of stray cats in their area. Over the years, they have taken in and cared for over 25 cats. Bob and Judy considered the kitties part of their family, and never turned any away when they were in need; even naming two after themselves.
Bob loved being outdoors, puttering around the house, doing yard work, mowing the lawn and shoveling. In the summer, he took particular joy in finding bargains at local yard sales. His wife said he often wore her out, checking out multiple sales in one day, running from the car, surveying the goods and then jumping back in the car to “hit the next sale.”
Bob will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Judy of Rockland; their 12 cats that Bob dearly loved; his two kitties with whom he had a special bond, Nicholas and Max; his wife's aunt, Violet Burton of Spruce Head; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Hank and Dot Bennett of Williamsport, Pa.
At Bob's request, he will be laid to rest privately in the spring at Achorn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
