Richard S. Carty Sr., obituary
TENANTS HARBOR — Richard S. Carty Sr, 80, died Dec. 7, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at his home.
Born in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 5, 1936, he was the son of Justin W. and Frances E Stanley Carty. While growing up in Milford, Mass., he began working at an early age. Throughout that period he worked at various jobs, including at one time operating Carty & Sons Florists with his father and brother.
In pursuit of his love of planes and flying, at the age of 16, Richard enlisted in the United States Air Force. He ultimately served in Korea as an aircraft mechanic. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Woburn, Mass., where he lived until moving to Medford.
It was in Medford that he met and fell in love with Judith Page. The couple were married Dec. 3, 1960. They lived in Medford until moving to Tewksbury, where they raised their family. Following retirement they moved to St. George, where they have since resided.
Richard worked most of his career in the auto industry, primarily as a service writer with Olson Cadillac in Woburn. After moving to Maine, he worked at Great Eastern Mussel Farms in Tenants Harbor and at van Baalen - Pacific Corporation in Rockland.
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Richard enjoyed participating in family activities. He volunteered as a youth hockey coach and could often be found playing hockey with his sons. He was an avid collector of baseball cards (with a collection numbering in the thousands), eagle plates and memorabilia, gun and coins.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Carty. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judith; his children, Richard S. Carty Jr. of Tewksbury, Mass., Scott W. Carty and his wife, Kathy, of Londonderry, N.H., Brian J. Carty and his wife, Brenda, of Owls Head, and Cheryl J. Goodie of Northport, Fla.; one sister, Janis Stokes of Woburn, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Eric, Michael, Craig, Trevor, Nikki, Jamie, Tamie, Colleen and Emily; 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to visit Monday, Dec. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a celebration of Richard's life will be held Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert Vaillencourt will officiate. Interment, with military Honors, will follow in South Parish Cemetery (Ridge) on Turkey Cove Road in Martinsville, St. George, Maine.
