Oceanside baseball, softball prep for championship runs

Softball riding 10 game win streak into playoffs; Baseball seeks elusive state title

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside Mariners baseball and softball squads have worked hard throughout the spring and are now preparing their respective runs to claim Class B state championships. 

The postseason opens Monday, June 5 with preliminary round contests which will help set up the regional quarterfinals to be played Thursday, June 8 and the regional semifinals being held Saturday, June 10. 

The regional championships will be held Tuesday, June 13 with baseball at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor and softball at Brewer High School. 

The Class B state championships will be held Saturday, June 17 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish with softball at 12:30 p.m. and baseball at 4:30 p.m.  

BASEBALL

The Oceanside baseball squad, headed by Don Shields, finished the 2017 campaign with a 9-7 record which earned them the 11th-seed in the Class B North bracket. The Mariners will open the playoffs with a preliminary round contest Monday, June 5 on the road against sixth-seed Mount Desert Island with a 4:30 p.m. start time. Shields noted that if the Monday contest is rained out, the game will be rescheduled for Tuesday, June 6 at 1 p.m. 

The Mariners opened the season with a 3-0 run with victories against Medomak Valley, Belfast and Maine Central Institute before falling to Maranacook. Oceanside rebounded with a victory against Leavitt before falling to Gardiner and Nokomis. Oceanside finished out the season with wins against Mount View, Lincoln Academy, Morse, Belfast and Winslow. The squad also fell to Erskine, Spruce Mountain, Medomak Valley and Waterville. 

Members of the Oceanside baseball team include Jonah Carlson (freshman; pitcher), Maguire LeBlanc (sophomore; catcher), Uriah Thongsophaphone (sophomore; second base and pitcher), Jack Wadsworth (junior; center field and right field), Tim Mazzeo (junior; right field), Michael Dougherty (junior; pitcher and shortstop), Connor Harvey (junior; left field), Hunter Davis (junior; second base and catcher), Titus Kaewthong (junior; catcher and center field), Jack Freeman (junior; pitcher and first base), Ben Ripley (sophomore; pitcher and second base), Logan Sheridan (junior; pitcher and first base), Michael Norton Jr. (junior; center field and pitcher), Matthew Waldron (junior; pitcher and third base), Coby Dorr (senior; third base), Sam Townsend (senior; catcher), Cole Stevens (sophomore; pitcher and left field) and Zach Cody (sophomore; second base). 

Assisting Shields is Bill Curtis, Shawn Hiller, Steve Hiller and Michael Travers. 

SOFTBALL

The Oceanside softball squad, headed by Rusty Worcester, finished the 2017 campaign with a 14-2 record which earned them the fourth-seed in the Class B North bracket. The Lady Mariners will open the playoffs with a regional quarterfinal round contest Thursday, June 8 at home in Thomaston against the winner of the fifth-seed Medomak Valley and 12th-seed Caribou preliminary round contest. 

After dropping the season opener to Medomak Valley, the Lady Mariners went on a four game winning streak with victories against Belfast, Maine Central Institute, Maranacook and Leavitt before falling to Gardiner. Since then, the Mariners are riding a 10 game winning streak into the playoffs with those wins coming against Nokomis, Mount View, Lincoln Academy, Erskine, Spruce Mountain, Morse, Medomak Valley, Belfast, Waterville and Winslow. 

The Oceanside softball team is comprised of Haylie Witham (senior; center field), Casey Benner (senior; second base), Lauren Hatch (senior; third base and center field), Abby Veilleux (sophomore; catcher), Casey Pine (junior; shortstop), Alexis Mazurek (senior; first base), Hannah Moholland (sophomore; right field), Rachael Joyce (sophomore; second base), Kalli Grover (sophomore; left field), Chloe Jones (sophomore; pitcher) and Morgan Heal (sohpomore; third base and left field). 

Assisting Worcester are Rachel Campbell and Mike McGuire.
