Criterion Film Series continues with My Dinner With André, May 26

ROCKLAND — The Criterion Series, a monthly film series sponsored by The Criterion Collection, continues with a screening of My Dinner With André (1981) on Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m., at the Strand Theatre. Criterion Series films are hosted in person by TCM (Turner Classic Movies) film presenter, and Strand Board Member, Alicia Malone or House Manager Liz McLeod.

In this captivating and philosophical film directed by Louis Malle, actor and playwright Wallace Shawn sits down with his friend the theater director André Gregory at a restaurant on New York’s Upper West Side, and the pair proceed through an alternately whimsical and despairing confessional about love, death, money, and all the superstition in between.

“Playing variations on their own New York–honed personas, Shawn and Gregory, who also cowrote the screenplay, dive in with introspective intellectual gusto, and Malle captures it all with a delicate, artful detachment,” said the Strand, in a news release. “A fascinating freeze-frame of cosmopolitan culture, My Dinner with André remains a unique work in cinema history.”

The Criterion Collection is a distribution company established in 1984 with a mission to preserve important classic and independent films from around the world and make them available to watch in analog and digital formats.
