Oceanside baseball, softball collect narrow prelim victories

ROCKLAND — The Oceanside baseball and softball teams begun their respective playoff runs on Wednesday, June 6 at home in Rockland. 

The Mariners finally hit the diamond after the opening round playoff games were rained out on June 4, due to weather. 

The Mariners tentatively rescheduled the games for June 5, but the weather did not cooperate on Tuesday either. 

Baseball: Oceanside 2, Presque Isle 0

The fourth-seeded Oceanside baseball team hosted 13th-seeded Presque Isle in a Class B North preliminary round contest on Wednesday, June 6. 

At the end of the contest, the Mariners were able to slip past the Wildcats 2-0 to advance to the regional quarterfinals, where the Mariners will host fifth-seeded Hermon Thursday, June 7. 

Oceanside improved its record to 14-3, while Presque Isle finished the season at 6-11. 

The Mariners plated its two runs in the fourth inning, while collecting four hits and committing two errors. 

The Wildcats collected five hits and committed one error. 

Working the mound for the hosts was Logan Sheridan, who allowed five hits, while fanning seven batters. 

On the mound for the visitors was RJ Gross, who allowed two earned runs, four hits, three walks and one hit-by-pitch, while fanning three. 

Leading the way offensively for Presque Isle was Jonah Hudson, who had two singles. 

Leading the way at the plate for Oceanside were Titus Kaewthong (single, double, RBI) and Michael Norton Jr. (two singles). 

Softball: Oceanside 1, Mount Desert Island 0

The third-seeded Oceanside softball team hosted 14th-seeded Mount Desert Island in a Class B North preliminary round playoff contest Wednesday, June 6 in Rockland. 

The Mariners were able to squeak out a 1-0 victory over the Trojans, thanks to a first inning run. 

The hosts improved to 15-2, while collecting four hits. The visitors concluded the season at 9-8, while collecting three hits and committing one error. 

With the win, Oceanside advances to host sixth-seeded Medomak Valley in the regional quarterfinals on Thursday, June 7 at 4 p.m.

Pitching for the Trojans was Lindsey McEachern, who fanned 11 batters, walked five and had one hit-by-pitch. 

Pitching for the Mariners was Chloe Jones, who fanned 11 and walked one. 

At the plate for Mount Desert Island were Hannah Chamberlain (single), Madison Thorton (single) and Maddie White (single). 

At the plate for Oceanside were Casey Pine (single, RBI), Hannah Moholland (single), Chloe Jones (single) and Hannah Robinson (single). 

“I'm very proud of these young ladies, they battled and came out on top,” said Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester. “We move onto tomorrow and that’s whats matters the most.”

“I’m very proud of this young team, and they will give it their all tomorrow like they do everyday,” said Worcester.
