Oceanside baseball shutout, Oceanside softball stuns Old Town

ELLSWORTH and OLD TOWN — The Oceanside baseball and softball teams both hit the road for their respective Class B North regional semifinal contests on Saturday, June 9. 

Below are the stats and recaps from both contests as reported to our sports department. 

Baseball: Ellsworth 12, Oceanside 0 (Five Innings)

In the Class B North regional semifinals on Saturday, June 9, the fourth-seeded Oceanside baseball team was mercy-ruled by top-seeded Ellsworth. 

With the victory, Ellsworth improved to 17-1, while Oceanside wrapped up the season at 15-4. 

Ellsworth plated five runs in each the first and third innings, and one run in each the second and fourth innings.

Ellsworth collected 10 hits. Oceanside collected four hits and committed two errors. 

On the mound for Ellsworth was Matt Burnett, who allowed four hits, had two hit-by-pitches and fanned nine batters. 

Working the hill for Oceanside were Joey Curtis (one inning, five runs, four earned runs, four hits, two walks), Matt Waldron (1.1 innings, five runs, five earned runs, four hits, two walks), Uriah Thongsophaphone (0.2 innings, one run, one earned run, two hits, one walk) and Cole Stevens (one inning, one run, one hit, one strikeout, one walk). 

At the plate for Ellsworth was Jack Lee (two singles), Matt Burnett (double), Jackson Curtis (triple) and Jared Hamilton (single, double). 

At the plate for Oceanside were Ben Ripley (double) and Logan Sheridan (double). 

Softball: Oceanside 3, Old Town 0

The third-seeded Oceanside softball team hit the road to play second-seeded Old Town on Saturday, June 9 in the Class B North regional semifinals. 

After five scoreless innings, the Mariners posted three runs in the sixth inning to win the game and advance to the regional championship, where the Mariners will play at Brewer on Wednesday, June 13. 

Oceanside improved its record to 17-2 with the win, while Old Town concluded the season at 16-2. 

Oceanside collected eight hits, compared to Old Town’s two. Old Town committed one error. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Oceanside was Chloe Jones, who fanned eight, walked two and allowed two hits. 

In the pitcher’s circle for Old Town was McKenna Smith, who fanned 11, walked one and allowed eight hits. 

At the plate for Oceanside were Jessica Watkinson (two singles, RBI), Rachel Joyce (double), Hannah Moholland (double), Chloe Jones (single, RBI), Kalli Grover (single, RBI), Casey Pine (single) and Grace Woodman (single). 

At the plate for Old Town were Jadeyn Caine (triple) and Olivia Albert (single). 

“Oceanside put together their best game of the year to date,” said Oceanside head coach Rusty Worcester. “Chloe Jones rose to the pressure of the big game and threw her best game of the year.”

Worcester also credited “[t]remendous pitching, defense and timely hitting” for the team’s victory, while also noting the Mariners will have quite the challenge on their hands for the regional championship. 

Worcester noted “we will give everything we have and leave everything on the field” on Wednesday.
