Crisis negotiator convinces man to surrender after gunshots fired from inside Northport residence
NORTHPORT — A Northport man was arrested after a shooting a firearm within his residence in the general direction of law enforement, according to a March 26, media report from Waldo County Sheriff's Lieutenant Cody Laite.
The incident began when Waldo County Communications received a 9-1-1 call around 5:33 p.m., March 24, from a female who reported a domestic violence situation that she had fled from. Officers responded to the location the woman had fled from on Small Lane in Northport.
Deputies first met with the woman at a safe location, according to the media release, where they took her statement and documented injuries she had reportedly received from an assault.
Deputies and a Maine State Police trooper arrived in the area of the Small Lane residence, and began efforts to contact the male, who had been identified as Thatcher Silar, 50.
The attempts to reach Silar were unsuccessful and Silar began shooting a firearm from inside the residence, including several rounds that were fired through the front door and in the direction of police, according to the release. Multiple shots were also fired out of various west-facing windows in the residence.
Officers evacuated two nearby residences. A crisis negotiator with Maine State Police was able to reach Silar by phone, who ultimately agreed to surrender and leave the residence. Silar was reportedly compliant upon his exit and was taken into police custody and transported to Waldo County Jail.
A search warrant for the residence was obtained and executed by police, and investigators from the WSO obtained evidence suggesting Silar fired 13 rounds. A total of five firearms were seized from the residence.
Silar has been charged with aggravated reckless conduct and domestic violence assault.
Officers reportedly also utilized Maine's Yellow Flag law in dealing with the incident.
Maine's Yellow Flag law was passed in 2020, and is also known as the Extreme Risk Protection Order. It is used to temporarily remove firearms from those deemed a serious threat to themselves and/or others.
