It was not a building to save, said Hannaford Bros. Co., the corporate owner of the plaza and grocery store.
"We made the difficult decision to demolish the building on Elm Street as its challenging condition made it unsuitable for occupancy," said Caitlin Cortelyou, external communications manager at Hannaford Supermarkets. "There are no further plans for the property at this time."
The building was constructed in 1970, and renovated inside in 2010. The banking systems; e.g., vault, drive-up windows and pneumatic tubes, were installed in 1997, according to Camden's property card.
Hannaford Bros. Co LLC, based in Scarborough, applied for the demolition permit with the Town of Camden. Plans call for re-vegetating the former building site with new landscaping.
The application cites the intent of Hannaford to plan 10 alternating trees — five winter hawthorn and five dogwood — along Route 1 in the right of way: "along the edge of the road like the other side of Route 1. The town would plant and maintain the trees."
