A new monthly series of dances called the MidCoast Maine Community Square Dance Party is beginning. The Party is dedicated to old time New England, Southern, Appalachian, Midwestern and French Canadian square dance and music traditions 

The series is partnering with Belfast Flying Shoes for these events; dances will be held mostly on third Sunday afternoons each month. 

"Come learn dances so old they are new again," said organizers, in a news release.

Dances will be mostly patter and singing squares, a few contras and mixers, as well as couple and novelty dances from old New England dancing traditions. All dances will be taught and beginners are always welcome. There will also be some concerts or music jams as a part of this series. 

These events will be travelling around Midcoast and Downeast Maine and will be hosted in local area barns, grange halls, pubs and occasional house dances. 

The first event will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024, at Crescent Moon Farm, 827 Woodmans Mill Road, Montville.

From 2 - 3:30 p.m., Concert of Old Time Southern and Appalachian tunes, Cajun music and Folk Ballads provided by Cathy Mason (Fiddle) and Sarah Jane Nelson (Fiddle, Guitar & Piano), from 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Community Square Dance Party. Music provided by Cathy Mason and Sarah Jane Nelson. Caller, Chris Ricciotti 6:30 p.m. Community Potluck and Singing.  

Please bring snack and/or dinner food to share and your voices for singing later. You can park in front of the dance barn in the gravel driveway, or along the road, or across the street from the farmhouse.  

Admission is sliding scale $10 - $20.  Additional donations are always welcome.

No bare feet dancing on the old barn floor – there are splinters.
