New exhibit to debut during 2025 Union Fair, Wild Blueberry Festival
UNION — The Union Fair Society, in cooperation with Jane and Sarah McCloskey, will introduce a permanent exhibit at the 2025 Union Fair/ Maine’s Wild Blueberry Festival.
This exhibit will feature a life-size diorama of the kitchen scene from the acclaimed children’s book Blueberries for Sal, written by Robert McCloskey in 1948. This exhibit will be on display July 30 - August 3, 2025.
Robert McCloskey (1914-2013) grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and became interested in art, music and inventing mechanical devices at an early age. He was the author and illustrator of just eight books during his lifetime but among them are unforgettable masterpieces such as Make Way for Ducklings, awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1941, Homer Price (1943), Blueberries for Sal, a Caldecott Honor book in 1949, Time of Wonder, which received a Caldecott Medal in 1958, One Morning in Maine, a Caldecott Honoree in 1953, and Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man (1963). A quintessentially American artist, McCloskey was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000.
There will be readings of the book by Sarah “Sal” McCloskey on Children’s Day, August 3. The Fair will be offering a raffle basket, with a hardcover copy of the book, Blueberries for Sal, a T-shirt, and other wild blueberry-themed items. T-shirts and books will be available for sale in the souvenir booth.
The schedule and location of readings will be released closer to the start of the fair. Please visit the website, at www.unionfair.org/bbfs, for updates.
"We look forward to seeing you at the fair!" said the Union Fair.
