TOPSHAM — A thrilling, nail-biting boys soccer game occurred Tuesday, Sept. 17 in Topsham when the undefeated Camden Hills varsity boys soccer team hit the road to challenge a winless Mount Ararat team.

After 80 minutes of regular play, the two squads had yet to score a goal sending the contest into a pair of five minute periods of sudden victory overtime.

It was there that the hosts were able to notch their first victory of the season to boost its record to 1-2, while the visiting Windjammers were dealt the season’s first loss and thus a 3-1 record.

The ‘Jammers held the edge in play, but were unable to get the go-ahead-goal to seal the victory, said Camden Hills head coach Ryan Hurley.

Camden Hills had two great break-a-way chances to end the game in the first few minutes of overtime, but in the end it wasn't meant to be, Hurley said.

Mount Ararat was awarded a penalty kick in the overtime period, astonishing the Windjammers who believed the foul occurred well outside the penalty area.

Mason Brigham struck the ensuing kick to the upper left of the goal and past the outstretched hands of 'Jammer keeper Casey Messer for the win.

The Windjammers held the advantage in shots on goal 15-3 as well as corners 7-2.

Messer recorded four saves in net for the Windjammers, while James Singleton tallied 14 saves for the Eagles.

"Today was a challenging result to accept,” said Hurley. “I told the boys the game is a reflection of life and it's often not fair. We played pretty well and created opportunities but it just wasn't our day.”

Hurley noted the team is a little banged up in its stretch of playing five games in nine games.

The team will now look to regroup ahead of its Thursday, Sept. 19 showdown in Rockport against Brunswick (4-0), a team Hurley noted is beginning to hit its stride.

The Windjammers will conclude the week with a road trip Saturday, Sept. 21 in a late-morning showdown with Skowhegan (2-2).
