Memorial Day quietly arrives; no parades but traditional ceremonies are to take place

Under a gentle rain, Memorial Day in the Midcoast arrived May 31. It will be a quiet observance today, and like last year, there will be no parades. However, Post 30 ceremonies will be taking place in various towns, including Camden, Rockport and Lincolnville.
According to the Congressional Research Service, there have been 567,079 military deaths resulting from being killed in action in all the wars and conflicts.
539 of those men and women were laid to rest in either Mountain View Cemetery or Oak Hill Cemeteries. There are 429 military veterans buried at Mountain View and 105 veterans at Oak Hill. Every grave that the Legion is aware of has a U.S. flag on that grave.
Camden
9 a.m. – Camden Public Landing (harbor) with prayer, wreath laying, Taps and volley salute.
9:10 a.m. - Travel to Conway Memorial for wreath laying, Taps.
9:20 a.m. - Color Guard march on Route 1 to the Village Green, enter and form at the Veterans Honor Roll. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps and volley salute.
9:30 a.m. - Color Guard march from the Village Green up Main Street to the Civil War and Spanish American War Memorials. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps, volley salute.
9:45 a.m. - Van ride* to Mountain View Cemetery and form at the American flag. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps and volley salute.
Rockport
10:00 a.m. - Van ride to the Rockport War Memorial. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps.
10:10 a.m. - Van ride to the Goose River Bridge. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps, volley salute.
10:20 a.m. - Van ride to Amesbury Cemetery. Prayer, Wreath laying, Taps, volley salute.
Lincolnville
11:00 a.m. - Van ride to the Lincolnville Memorial Park. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps, volley salute.
11:30 a.m. - Van ride to Lincolnville Beach/Frohock Bridge. Prayer, wreath laying, Taps, volley salute.
Sukeforth said he hopes people will still come out and attend some of the events mentioned and join with the Legion to remember our many men and women who sacrificed so much for their town, city, state and nation.
